Newsbrief: Seattle-based Undead Labs confirmed today in a blog post that it has sold over two million copies of its open-world zombie survival game State of Decay since it debuted last June. This is interesting because Undead Labs claims to have done so without spending anything on marketing; instead, the studio credits its success primarily to positive word-of-mouth and the number of people streaming themselves playing State of Decay. And the numbers are likely high: Undead Labs sold over 250,000 copies of the game in two days when it initially launched on Xbox Live (only Minecraft sold faster) and later brought it to Steam as well. The studio has since gone on sign a multi-year, multi-title contract with Microsoft and announce its next game, a free-to-play monster collection RPG for mobile devices that's being worked on by a second team within the studio.
