Virtual- and augmented-reality game design is an especially hot topic this year.

Amid the launch of multiple virtual reality headsets and the debut of hyper-popular augmented-reality games like Pokémon Go, it's worth considering: how can developers design engrossing games and immersive narratives for VR, AR and beyond?

At GDC 2016's sibling conference VRDC, Rob Morgan -- writer of the first PlayStation 3 AR Wonderbook games and nDreams' narrative-driven VR game The Assembly -- walked attendees through the different ways narrative techniques developed in AR can help overcome the challenge of creating "emotional immersion" in VR.

It was an interesting, high-level talk about the many ways people respond to interactive stories, especially when elements of those stories appear to be very real, very tangible elements of their real world. If you missed Morgan's talk in person and want to catch up, you can now watch the whole thing for free via the official GDC YouTube channel.

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
