Newsbrief: As part of its financial results, Sony has announced [PDF] that the PlayStation 4 sold 6.4 million units during the last three months of 2014 -- a leap from 4.5 million units for the same period of the prior year, its launch period.

It's not entirely clear if these are sales to consumers or to retailers based on the statement, but what's obvious is that the company has managed to continue to drive interest in its newest console.

Meanwhile, sales of the eight year old PlayStation 3 dropped significantly in the same period; it sold 3.3 million consoles in the last three months of 2013, but just 1.1 million for that period of 2014.

Microsoft sold 6.6 million consoles across both Xbox 360 and Xbox One during the same time, The Verge reports; the company  doesn't break down individual platform sales, however.  For its part, Nintendo sold 1.91 million Wii U consoles during the same period.
