Anonymous sources have hinted that Nintendo's next console, the codenamed NX, could be a handheld system with detachable controllers.
Speaking to Eurogamer, sources said the device will feature a screen flanked by a pair of removable controller sections, which can be equipped or unequipped on the fly.
The NX will also reportedly use a base or dock station to connect the console to TV screens.
As previously rumored, it was suggested the NX will utilize game cartridges rather than optical discs, and will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra mobile processor.
Other sources dismissed the notion that the console will run on Android, explaining that Nintendo preferred to create its own operating system from the ground up.
Due to the NX's unique design, it's been implied that backwards compatibility might be a thing of the past, and that Nintendo might actually sacrifice some hardware power to create a system that's compact yet capable.
Of course, as the rumor mill continues to churn, it's worth remembering that none of this has actually been confirmed.
Nintendo, as expected, declined to comment on these rumblings, which means right now the only concrete information we have is that the NX is a "brand-new concept" due to launch worldwide in March 2017.
