Recently, Google’s virtual reality announcements have been focused on mobile devices, but since February there have been rumors that a division of the company was working on a standalone VR headset. According to Recode however, that reputed project may now be shuttered.
Recode’s Mark Bergen writes that sources tell him of a VR division in Google’s X research lab unrelated to Google Daydream that was developing a headset with its own operating system. Bergen says that project has now been shut down.
When The Wall Street Journal covered similar reports a few months ago, it did note that the standalone VR project might never see release.
The mobile-focused Google Daydream has already gained engine support from Unity and Epic Games, and this project’s closure may indicate the company sees a bigger future in the less crowded field for mobile VR development.
