This week Rad Game Tools updated its Oodle library of data compression tools for game developers with two new compressors, Selkie and Mermaid, that are faster than Oodle's extant Kraken.
What's interesting here (aside from the fun names) is the speed at which these tools can supposedly compress and decompress game data, potentially affording game makers more efficient ways to load assets faster or distribute games in smaller packages.
Oodle developer (and longtime game dev) Charles Bloom published a blog post this week introducing Selkie and Mermaid that digs deeper into how they work, as well as graphical depictions of their performance in tests.
Curious developers can find further details on the new compressors there, as well as on RGT's Oodle website.
