Newsbrief: Oculus sold around 60,000 development kits for its original DK1 virtual reality headset. Now the company says that more than 45,000 DK2 dev kits have been pre-ordered ahead of shipping. Pre-orders for the second generation Oculus Rift opened back in March. The second build features an external camera which allows the headset to track three more 'degrees of freedom' -- forward/backward, left/right, and up/down -- than the first Oculus Rift development kit. Note that production on the original DK1 kit was halted around the 50,000 sold mark, as the company noted that certain components used in the dev kit were no longer being manufactured. Oculus says that roughly 10,000 of the DK2 kits will be shipped out to developers before the end of July, while the rest will filter out in the weeks afterwards.
