Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has officially revealed the company’s upcoming standalone VR headset, the $199 Oculus Go. While he didn’t say when the headset is expected to launch, Oculus did note that the developer should be able to get their hands on devkits as early as November.
Zuckerberg notes that VR has typically fallen into two spaces: either PC or mobile powered. Oculus Go aims to cover the neglected middle-ground by offering up a $199 VR headset that runs completely on its own, without needing a PC or smartphone to provide images or power.
If you’re a developer that has released apps or games for Gear VR, chances are your creation can branch over to the Oculus Go. The headset uses a controller similar to the Gear VR and will use some of the same apps as the existing mobile phone-powered headset. Additionally, the headset comes with built-in spatial audio and a good ol’ fashioned 3.5mm headphone jack as well.
More details on the Oculus Go are expected in early 2018.
