The organizers of annual video game trade fair gamescom announced today that, "due to the terrible incidents of the past weeks," this year's event will have stricter security measures that include a ban on imitation weapons or weapon-like items and bag checks for people trying to enter the grounds.
This is something worth noting because gamescom, which takes place in Cologne, Germany later this month, is the largest video game trade event in the world and a popular place for many developers to exhibit their games.
The new security measures apply to exhibitors as well as attendees, and thus any devs planning to attend gamescom (or its preceding event, GDC Europe) are being advised to leave unnecessary bags at home and warned to expect longer queueing times.
The ban on imitations weapons is mostly aimed at gamescom visitors (notably, cosplayers) but any devs who are exhibiting at the show and plan to have people walking the floor carrying weapon-like items will have to their costumes registered and labeled by security, at which point those costumes will not be permitted off the gamescom grounds.
