It's that time again -- the organizers of the 2014 Penny Arcade Expo have once again selected ten indie games to be showcased in free booth space at the annual show in August. Indie developers began submitting entries for this year's PAX 10 back in May, and the following ten winners were chosen by a panel of 50 game industry experts to exhibit at the upcoming event in Seattle. Taking part in the PAX 10 can often be a boon to independent creators; much like the IGF Pavilion at GDC, the PAX 10 showcase offers developers an opportunity to get their games in front of people and drum up media interest. The PAX 10 has been a part of the annual gaming convention since 2008, when winners included Audiosurf and The Maw. This time around, your PAX 10 titles are: * Flickers (Windows) - Digipen's Neat Snake Flickers bills itself as an abstract, atmospheric, timing-based 2D platformer following the journey of the player from the heart of a dying flower through a world blanketed in perpetual twilight. Jump between hovering sparks called “flickers” as you make your way through painterly environments to reach the moon and transform the world around you. * Duet (iOS) - Kumobius Duet is a hypnotic action arcade game with a soundtrack by Melbourne composer and Gotye multi-instrumentalist Tim Shiel. Elegant and minimal, Duet asks players simply to navigate two orbiting spheres past an increasingly complex maze of falling obstacles. As the difficulty increases, the tension mounts, and a peculiar narrative unfolds. * Framed (Windows, Mac, iOS) - Loveshack In this narrative puzzler you rearrange the panels of an interactive comic book to change the order of events, and outcome of the story. * Life Goes On (Windows, Mac, Linux) – Infinite Monkeys Entertainment Life Goes On is a comically morbid platformer where you guide heroic knights to their demise and use their dead bodies to solve puzzles. On your quest to find the Cup of Life, you will summon knight after knight to be brutally sacrificed. * Mushroom 11 (Windows, Mac, Linux, Handhelds) - Untame Mushroom 11 is a puzzle platformer with unique control mechanics in which you guide an amorphous blob through a post-apocalyptic landscape. We interviewed Untame's Itay Keren about the game when it was nominated for an IGF Excellence in Design award last year, and now the game will be featured in PAX's indie game showcase. * Nova-111 (Windows, Mac) - Funktronic Labs Nova-111 is a sci-fi themed game in which you solve puzzles and engage in strategic battles with astrobiological creatures in a twisted environment where the turn-based levels gradually transmogrify to support real-time action. * Poof vs. The Cursed Kitty (Windows) - Arkedo Studio/Neko Ent. Poof vs. The Cursed Kitty is a mix between tower defense, and platforming action, a game focused on hardcore gameplay, tight controls and choices, inspired by games like Orcs Must Die, Super Mario Bros. and Super Crate Box. * Skullduggery! (iOS) – ClutchPlay Games Skullduggery! paints players as a Semi-Organic Autonomous Skull, working as a collection agent for the IRS. Using the elasticity of your own brain, flick yourself around the fortresses of the afterlife’s biggest deadbeats. * Stikbold! (Windows, consoles) - Reign Bros. A historically inaccurate dodgeball game, set in the '70s, where legends were forged and destroyed at the throw of a ball. Inspired by iconic buddy movies, Stikbold! features local multiplayer paired with a groovy storyline and cooperative gameplay. * The Counting Kingdom (Windows) - Little Worlds Interactive The Counting Kingdom is a game about monsters, magic and math. Players are tasked with defending the realm in this tactical math puzzler featuring tower defense gameplay and a colorful cast of characters.
