According to a report by CNET, Asus has been working on its own augmented reality headset and is planning on releasing the device next year.

The Taiwanese hardware manufacturer confirmed the existence of the headset during an earnings webcast.

"It should be next year when we come out with a product," said company CEO Jerry Shen. "We think AR (augmented reality) will be very important for people's lives."

Unlike virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, which focus on immersing users in a digital environment, AR headsets allow wearers to actually interact with virtual objects.

When it comes to augmented reality Microsoft is currently leading the pack, with the Windows creator planning on getting its $3000 HoloLens headset into the hands of developers early next year.
